GREEN COVE SPRINGS – A Clay County Sheriff’s Office bailiff was arrested and charged with schemes to defraud and grand theft after the agency learned that he was forging military leave documents and submitting them to CCSO for payment.
Johnathon Jones was booked into the Clay County Jail on Monday.
According to a release from CCSO, Jones was a soldier with the Georgia State Defense Force (GSDF). However, since February 2024, he had been submitting false military leave orders, claiming to fulfill his duties with the GSDF. After investigating, detectives discovered that from February 2024 to February 2025, Jones submitted 39 days of military leave, totaling $8,115.28, which was paid to him by the sheriff’s office.
Detectives revealed that on 30 different dates, he claimed to be on leave and performing his GSDF duties, but he was actually in Clay, Duval, St. Johns, and Orange counties. Changes made to the documents included his participation in missions and training, as the GSDF confirmed its master rosters didn’t include Jones.
Jones resigned from CCSO on Monday.
