GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Clay County has become a permanent tribute to the documents and principles that helped shape the United States.
Earlier this year, Clay County received a package from Foundation Forward, Inc. containing seven large steel plaques depicting the nation’s Charters of Freedom. The plaques represent the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights and were provided to the county for free as part of Foundation Forward’s effort to make these founding documents accessible in communities across the country.
County leaders selected the Historic Triangle in Green Cove Springs as the permanent home for the display, placing the founding documents among some of Clay County’s own most significant historic landmarks.
Through sponsorships and donations, Carlton Construction installed the monuments in their permanent location in the Historic Triangle.
The public will be able to view them at the county's upcoming America 250 event at the Historic Triangle on Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free event will feature patriotic music, food trucks for purchase, demonstrations, a kids' story time and crafts, a reading of the Declaration of Independence, and a ceremony with local and federal leaders.
