FEMA is updating Clay County’s Flood Insurance Rate Maps.
Some residents may be required to carry flood insurance as a result, while for others, this requirement may no longer be in place.
You can use the county’s interactive maps to find out if your property is affected.
Residents can ask questions and learn more at the FEMA Flood Map Update Open House on Friday, Sept. 12, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Clay County Emergency Operations Center, 2519 State Road 16 West, Green Cove Springs. FEMA and county staff will be there to answer questions.
A 90-day appeal/comment period to follow (start date TBD).
To ask questions or submit an appeal, email floodteam@claycountygov.com. The appeal process will allow property owners to submit scientific or technical data if they believe the maps are incorrect. The official start date for this period will be announced when available.
The updated maps use improved science and data, offering more accurate information than the 2014 maps. While most properties will remain unchanged, some will be added to or removed from Special Flood Hazard Areas. The maps can be found at claycountygov.com/community.
Clay County urges residents and business owners to review the maps and learn how changes may affect their insurance property protection activities and emergency planning.
The anticipated effective date of the maps is spring 2027.
Floodways are defined as the channel of a river, creek or other watercourse, and the adjacent land areas that must be preserved to safely discharge the base flood without causing increases in water elevation. Flood insurance is required for mortgage structures in this zone, as are No-Rise Studies for any new development, flood permits and elevation certificates for new structures or substantial improvements.
