GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Clay High School finished up Spring Break play with a Friday 3-0 win over 5A-Bishop Kenny after a Thursday 10-4 pounding by Bartram Trail as the 6A-Blue Devils (6-3) regrouped after a rivalry loss to Fleming Island on Fri., March. 15.
The loss to 7A-Bartram Trail (8-2 overall) featured four runs given up in the seventh inning by the Blue Devils’ defense with three walks and a batter hit by Clay pitchers Gavyn Curry and Caleb Parks. The Bears scored off a sacrifice fly and errors at shortstop and first base.
Starting pitcher Justin Mosley was chased with two walks and a double putting Bartram up 1-0 and two flys balls giving the Bears a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Against Bishop Kenny (7-4), Dylan Faulkner controlled the bats for the shutout with 11 strikeouts. Bishop Kenny’s pitching also got 11 strikeouts, but Clay had nine hits.
In the fifth, Clay drew first blood with a Blake Parker single that errors put Parker at third before tagging up and scoring off a Garret Chun line drive.
