The annual Clay County Agricultural Fair got underway on a glistening Thursday afternoon when the 90-degree air felt like damp cotton.
It’s no secret the fairgrounds in Green Cove Springs will be the go-to destination through Sunday, April 13.
The sizzling sun accompanied by humidity won’t deter upward of 180,000 visitors, likely resulting in chronic traffic – particularly on weekends. Many are taking the event’s theme, “Meet Me at the Fair,” to heart.
Opening day at the front gate included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, classic cars, and a prayer before the National Anthem. Tasha Hyder, the fair's executive director, was among the emcees.
Tim Tebow's aunt, Patty Tebow of Jacksonville, was the first visitor to enter Thursday.
County VIPs, including the region's finest from the police and fire departments, were in full force. Pollen wasn't in short supply, either, as those with allergies could attest.
Vendors were hunkered down, striving to stay cool in kiosks, food trucks and in tents as far as the eye could see. By mid-afternoon, exhibition halls were luring many pedestrians seeking shade.
As Sheriff Michelle Cook advised would-be attendees: “Pack your patience” and hydrate. To that end, a cooling tent and boatloads of beverages were available.
Traffic was relatively light mid-afternoon; drivers were going (and arriving) with the flow.

As the sun dropped like a descending hot-air balloon, musical performers Uncle Kracker and Sugar Ray each took the stage for the first of a plethora of upcoming concerts. They filled the heavy air with 1990s hit singles to the delight of spectators.
