GREEN COVE SPRINGS — The Board of County Commissioners honored the Northeast Florida Chapter of the American Red Cross with special recognition at Tuesday's meeting.

The county proclaimed March as American Red Cross Month, which is also celebrated nationally.

Present were local chapter staff members and volunteers, who were recognized for their continued humanitarian service to Clay County and the state of Florida.

Founded in 1881, the American Red Cross responds to, and provides free aid for, more than 64,000 disasters annually.

The local chapter provides a range of services across 13 counties in Northeast Florida, including military and veteran aid.

District 2 Commissioner Alexandra Compere read the proclamation. In 2024, the organization helped more than 1,100 families affected by home fires and other disasters, 26 of which were in Clay County.

Additionally, the board also gave special recognitions for National Procurement Month and Government Finance Professionals Week, celebrating the staff's considerable work on those subjects.

In other business Tuesday, county staff gave updates on the progress off the Bonded Transportation Program and some Capital Projects.

Here are a few highlights from the report:

  • Following a request for qualifications, proposals for the new Oakleaf Plantation Library are due on March 31. The library will consist of designing a modern 18,000-square-foot building on Oakleaf Village Parkway.
  • The county has entered into an agreement for the development of a pad-ready site for the new Fire Station 15, located off the frontage road on State Road 23 near Sandridge Road. The building will consist of four apparatus paves, bunk rooms, a kitchen, a dayroom and a meeting room. The county said the team is working with the purchasing and legal department to use an existing, continuous contract for the facility’s design and construction.
  • Work is continuing on phase one and phase two of the County Road 220 road widening and bridge replacement. As bridge removal work begins soon, residents will see an increase in traffic and construction. The county asks that residents practice patience. The anticipated completion date is late 2026.
