GREEN COVE SPRINGS- County commissioners voted Tuesday to approve a request to move the location of its future Public Safety Fire Training Facility to Outdoor Adventure Park.
The project was initially planned to be constructed on Camp Blanding, however due to site challenges, and high costs, it was scrapped.
Plans for the burn building began back in 2021. It will be used as a training structure for firefighters to practice live fire-training exercises. The towers are usually tailored to specific scenarios with high temperatures and smoke.
County staff conducted a cost and feasibility review, which compared the Camp Blanding site to Outdoor Adventure Park.
The park is a 158-acre complex located just beside of Camp Blanding, at 3829 Sgt. Bradley Crose Road.
Staff concluded that the cost to build the facility at the camp would reach $4.9 million, while construction costs at Outdoor Adventure Park would be $4.2 million.
The county found that pros for the park well outweighed the cons associated with constructing the facility at Camp Blanding, and, operationally, it would be more beneficial to conduct the trainings on county-owned property.
