After browsing through Facebook over the weekend, I noticed somebody posted a warning on the Keystone Heights page about the Clay County Sheriff’s Office setting up radar along State Road 17. Someone said it was the month’s end, so deputies had to fill their “quota” of speeding tickets. That’s a myth. In fact, quotas are illegal in Florida, and you can thank our neighbor to the west for that. The “Waldo Bill” was passed in 2017 after investigators learned the town south of Starke generated 73% of its operating budget from speeding tickets. Then governor Rick Scott disbanded the agency, and the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office now patrols it. And back to Keystone Heights, the best way to avoid a ticket, quota or not, is to drive within the speed limit.
