This week, we focus on March, a name that stems from Mars, the Roman god of war. On March 1, 1872, U.S. Congress and President Ulysses S. Grant established Yellowstone National Park, the first of its kind worldwide. The famous saying “Beware the ides of March” comes from the Latin word iduare (to divide) and refers to Julius Caesar’s assassination on March 15, 44 B.C. Additional trivia about our third month on the calendar: It marks Barista Day, National Pig Day and World “Compliment” Day; in 1941, the first issue of Captain America comic book was published; the notorious Salem witch trials began in Massachusetts circa 1962; March’s birth flower is the daffodil; its birthstones are aquamarine and bloodstone; and the March 20 vernal equinox signals the first day of spring.
