FLEMING ISLAND - Fleming Island High's sports had a bevy of state championship athletes in 2025 led by golfer Tyler Mawhinney and triple jumper Mikayla Shavers and the Golden Eagles athletic programs had 11 signees on National Signing Day (Feb. 4) getting final signatures on paper to continue their feats at the next level.
Mawhinney, a state champion for his junior season as well as the leader of back to back team state titles for coach Bruce Cloud, will be heading to NCAA Div I third-ranked Vanderbilt University for his next fall golf game while Mikayla Shavers, who got her triple jump state title last year after two second place finishes the prior two seasons, will have one more shot at a second title before heading to the University of South Florida after her senior season is over.
One dual sport athlete with a bevy of accomplishments in two sports is cross country state qualifier Brooke Reynolds, who will head to Lenoir-Rhyne University for cross country after being a state meet swimmer for the Golden Eagles during her four-year sports career at Fleming Island. Lenoir-Rhyne finished 11th in last year's NCAA Div. II Southeast Region championships.
From the swim team, distance swimmer Elizabeth Loehr will be heading to Florida Atlantic University to continue her swims in the 500 free, the 200 free and the individual medley events that she specialized in. Also from golf, Ryan Houck, a lead contender that was side by side with Mawhinney the past two years chasing state titles, will head to Palm Beach University for his next round of 18s.
From cross country, Fleming Island also sends state meet ace Andrew Boyer to Jacksonville University right in his own backyard to continue his harrier days.
From football, offensive lineman Corbett Yarbrough, one of the leaders of a strong finish for the Golden Eagles, will be a few hours west at Florida A & M University. FAMU was 5-7 last season.
Baseball has the high-emotion play of Caden Swartz heading to Brewton-Parker Christian University in Georgia to crank up his pitching arm.
Lacrosse sends Will Larkin, a stellar defender, to Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina. Belmont Abbey had an 11-4 season last year with a thrilling 6-5 loss to North Greenville in the Conference Carolinas Conference championship game.
