When Lisa, my now adult daughter, was about 7 or 8 years old, she decided she wanted a silver poodle. Her mother and I were against it, but she continued to ask for the little dog. Over and over she begged for the pet she so desperately wanted.
One day she brought home a story she had written as an assignment in school. She titled it, “The Silver Poodle.” It was about a little girl who wanted a silver poodle more than anything in the world. But her parents would not get her one.
It was a sad story. And it touched our hearts. So, with a new understanding, my wife and I discussed getting her what she wanted most. The following Saturday, we went out and bought her a beautiful silver poodle.
She named him Pierre. We soon learned that Pierre was a mean dog. He hated children. He was constantly growling, barking and snapping at everyone in the family except me. By default, I soon became responsible for his care. One day he bit my hand and that was the end of Pierre’s welcome in our family.
At various times as they grew up, my children had pets. Mostly they had dogs. They had big ones and little ones. All the pets are remembered. We still talk fondly about them and how our hearts were broken when we lost them. We remember Pierre, differently.
A lot of things in life do not turn out the way we expect. Sometimes the thing you want the most may not be the best thing for you.
You may have a “silver poodle” today. You finally got something you wanted more than anything. You were willing to do anything to have it. You believed it would make you happy. Now you have it and you realize it would have been better if you had never received what you wanted most!
Live to have what God desires for you. He has a good plan for you. Come to the place in your life that you want what God wants for you. You will then be in joyful contentment.
