FLEMING ISLAND - Fleming Island High sophomore golfer Sophia Moody opened lightning fast (pun intended) in her 2026 season with a record-setting 5-under-par 30 on her first nine-hole outing at Fleming Island Golf Club.
Moody ripped through the back nine with six birdies, one bogey and two pars to lead the Golden Eagles to a dual match win over Keystone Heights on Aug. 19.
In a solid second place tie were Fleming Island senior Shayla Abbas and Keystone Heights High junior Aubrey Brooks. They both carded three-over 39s.
Both Moody and Abbas were state tournament qualifiers last year.
Her fast start came in some matches that, coincidentally, included cancelations for lightning. But she avoided inclement weather to win the AJGA-sponsored Billy Horschel Atlanta Classic on Aug. 21-24. She took home the top prize there with a 4-under-par score effort to beat North Carolina's Lauren Davis by two shots.
Moody also won the AJGA Junior Tournament held in Lufkin, Texas at the Crown Colony Country Club on Aug. 10-13 with rounds of 68-70-76 to finish 2-under.
With just the one FHSAA dual match, Moody is currently ranked by Iwanaker.com golf rankings as the No. 1 player in Class 2A.
Behind Moody were Middleburg's Jordan Bork in second, and Braelyn Isbell in fourth and Abbas in fifth. Orange Park senior Avery Schaefer was 23rd after one round.
For the boys, Fleming Island freshman Jacob Sands was fourth after one match, with Middleburg senior Logan Wahlstrom in 10th after four rounds.
In Class 1A, St. Johns Country Day School junior Beckham Cummings was 10th with four rounds played. Senior teammate William McGready, a transfer from Fleming Island, was 14th.
For the girls in Class 1A, St. Johns senior Addison Kipnis was 10th after one round.
In recent matches, Middleburg's boys lost by one stroke to Palatka, 164-165 with Wahlstrom winning with a 37. Middleburg then got a win over Keystone Heights, 165-173, with Wahlstrom finishing again as the top scorer with a 36. Keystone Heights senior Nathaniel Bardier fired a 38. Wahlstrom eagled No. 17 to capture the lead. Bardier bogeyed 17, but he birdied 18 to make it close.
In girls action on Aug. 24, Middleburg beat Oakleaf at Eagle Landing, 185-254. The Lady Broncos' top four finishers were led by Bork with a 41 and Isbell 42.
Upcoming on Sept. 14 at Fleming Island is the Randy Warren Memorial Tournament.
