JACKSONVILLE - The Pace Island's Piranhas summer swim team was in third place in the 10-unders after Day 1 of the First Coast Summer Swim League championship meet held last Saturday and Sunday at the University of North Florida. Timuquana and Argyle also punched up big numbers for the day.

"We have a lot more swimmers in the 11-above group, which is our high school-aged swimmers," said Pace Island coach Jacqueline Kroggel, the architect of Combines, Men, Women, last year. "The numbers will be better in our Day 2, which is the older swimmers."

Kroggel's prophecy was nearly spot-on as her Pace Island older-age swimmers, mainly high schoolers, stormed to the women's team title, edging Timuquana and Argyle. The Piranhas finished third in combined and fourth in men's scoring.

Timuquana War Eagles dominated in numbers with a 2967.5 score to stay ahead of a Susan Johnson (OPHS) coached Argyle squad with 2232.5 points, then Pace Island third at 1993.

In the men's scoring, Timuquana soared to a 1,749.5-1,110.5 win over Argyle, with Eagle Harbor's Screaming Eagles in at third at 796.5 and Pace in fourth at 747.

In the women's scoring, Pace Island snuck past Timuquana, 1,246-1,218, with Argyle third at 1,122 and the Oakleaf's Orcas in fourth at 975.5.

High point swimmers for Pace Island were Katelyn Moore, 18, and a state meet swimmer for Fleming Island High, with 57 points after finishing first in the 100 and 50  free, second in 50 fly and first with 200 medley relay; Cailyn Blair, 12, (56 points) with firsts in the 100 free and 50 breast, third in the 50 free and fourth with 200 free relay, and another Fleming Island state swimmer, Summer Van Wagenen, 17, (53 points) with a first in the 50 breast, second in the 100 individual medley and a third in 50 fly.

The Danisovszky trio of Darcy Danisovszky, 9, finished with 49 points while edging sisters Cassidy Danisovszky, 13, with 48 points and Phoebe Danisovszky, 7, with 39 points.

One of the more impressive performances was from Pace Island 6-year-old Asher Weeks, who scored 53 points by finishing first in the 25 fly, second in the 25 free and third in the 25 back, plus a sixth in the 100 free relay.

For Argyle, who was missing some key high schoolers while they were at the summer nationals, Johnson got big days from siblings Penny, 10, and John, 8, Grewe, who combined for 39 and 37 points, respectively. John Grewe was the 100 free champion and Penny was on the championship 100 medley relay.

Also for Argyle, four swimmers from the Yeykal family - Noelle, 9, Evangeline, 10, Johan, 13 and Abraham, 15, totaled 135 team points with seven total gold medals.

Two of Johnson's Orange Park High teammates - Jabin Buckman, 17, and Ashton Juarez, 18 - finished with 46 points and 36 points, with Juarez winning the 50 fly and Argyle winning the 200 free relay.

The Oakleaf Orcas were led by 60 points from Bentley Sikes, 8; 50 points from Braden Bobias, 11; 56 points from Brylee Wood, 16 and the 52 points from Charlie Wood, 8.

Brylee Wood, an Oakleaf High standout, won the 50 fly and back, and she was third in a state meet qualifier. The 50 free was won by Pace Island's Katelyn Moore, and Fleming Island High state meet qualifier Reynolds in second. Adrianna Georgiou, 10, scored 50 points for the Orcas.

Eagle Harbor got top scores from Graham Karney, 11, (48 points), Raegan Robertson, 14, (40 points) with wins in the 50 fly and free; 36 points from brother Grant, who had a win in the 200IM, and 37 points from Reynolds.

Eagle Landing, seventh in all three team categories, was led by Laney Behrendsen, 10, (60 points), with wins in 100IM, 50 fly, 100 free; 60 points from Maxwell Morgan, 9, who had wins in 50 back and fly and 100 free, and 58 points from Penelope Morales, 14, who had wins in the 50 breast and 100IM.
