FLEMING ISLAND - Fleming Island girls lacrosse opened their season under new head coach Isabella Marx and rattled off seven straight wins before taking their first loss on Feb. 27 to 15th-ranked in Florida; ninth in Florida 1A South Walton. South Walton was a region semifinalist last year.
The Golden Eagles rebounded and won a 14-7 match with Matanzas before taking on (8-3, ranked 19th in 2A)) Buchholz on Monday, March 9.
Though Buchholz opened to a quick 6-1 lead, Fleming Island got a handful of goals to have the game finish at 12-7. Fleming Island's record is now 8-2.
Prior to the Buchholz match, lead scorers were Meredith Giebeig with 33 goals and Brylee Thomas with 30 goals, along with Kelsey Hodge adding 22 and Kathryn Ward putting in 16.
Fleming Island continued play with a March 11 game against Creekside (4-4) before Spring Break. Fleming Island's boys team is now 4-4.
