CLAY COUNTY – County Commissioner Gavin Rollins is running for U.S. Congress.
Rollins joined an expanded field of candidates Monday to replace retiring Rep. Ted Yoho (FL-3) in the House of Representatives.
Yoho recently kept his promise by announcing he wouldn’t run beyond four terms. That left a void ahead of the 2020 general election.
“I am excited to announce that I am officially running for Congress,” Rollins said in a Facebook post Monday morning. “Our nation faces threats overseas and here at home. We need warriors in Washington.”
Rollins believes he is one of those warriors, with a history as a captain in the National Guard and as a teacher in Clay County.
“I’ve fought for our country’s future in combat zones thousands of miles away and in classrooms right here at home,” Rollins said.
He’s currently serving as a county commissioner for the Clay County Board of Commissioners. Rollins said that if elected, he’ll fight alongside President Donald Trump to protect freedoms he believes are currently threatened in America.
“I’ll fight alongside President Trump to protect the religious liberty, economic freedom and the right to bear arms of each and every hardworking Floridian,” Rollins said.
Rollins joins the race for the position that already has six Republican and two Democrat candidates. Joseph Millado, Matthew Raines, Judson Sapp, David Theus, Amy Pope-Wells and Tom Wells have filed as Republicans, while Adam Christensen and Philip Dodds are vying for the Democratic nomination.
The 3rd District encompasses Alachua, Bradford, Clay, Putnam and Union county, and sections of Marion county are a part of this district as well.
