Erabelle Contant, of Keystone Heights, won the Florida Regional Competition of the Ronald Reagan Debate Series on May 10 at Colonial High School. The event showcased local high school students’ skill in persuasive public speaking and respectful discourse.
Contant’s performance during the competition earned her a coveted spot at the National Championship, to be held this July at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California. The senior has also been awarded an all-expenses paid trip to the National Championship for herself and a chaperone, as well as the opportunity to compete for a share of $50,000 in scholarship money.
“The (series) was a new and exciting chapter for me, as it was my very first time competing in this style of debate,” Contant said. “I was inspired to participate because it offered a platform for civil, thoughtful discussion, which is something that deeply resonates with my ambition to pursue law and advocacy. Winning this competition is both humbling and motivating, and I’m proud to represent my school, team and Florida this July in California. This opportunity feels like a steppingstone toward the future I’m working to build.”
The Reagan Debate Series is designed to foster respectful dialogue, critical thinking, and effective communication among high school students. Contant exemplified these values during the regional competition, skillfully engaging with complex topics and presenting arguments with clarity and poise.
Chief Education Programming Officer Dr. Richard Schroeder said, “Contant’s remarkable achievements reflect the principles championed by President Reagan, emphasizing the significance of respectful discourse and cultivating unity through mutual understanding. It is a privilege to have her represent Florida at the National Championship this summer, and we extend our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for her future successes.”
