Lake Region Kiwanis committed to improving lives of children

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS – The Lake Region Kiwanis Club has been actively serving its community and the surrounding youth for more than 30 years. Established in 1989 as a non-profit service organization and part of Kiwanis International, their mission is to serve children in local communities and around the world.

“The Kiwanis International is a global organization of clubs that are dedicated to improving the lives of children one community and one child at a time,” said Tina Santillo, President of the Lake Region Kiwanis. “We’re united all over the world in combating different issues that children and families may have such as hunger, homelessness, literacy and guidance. Any need that we see, we are able to try and work on a solution.”

Through the years, the local Kiwanis club has actively supported the youth and continues to do so through their programs. Programs such as their K-Kids Program, Builders Club and Key Club allow students to learn leadership skills and good character traits. They also recognize elementary students who demonstrate good behavior through their Terrific Kid Program. In addition, they provide college scholarships to high school seniors and run concession stand during high school games to raise funds for the athletic program.

However, Lake Region Kiwanis is also actively involved in its community. Fundraisers such as their 5k Race, annual golf and mini-golf tournaments are some of the ways they help with needs in the community. The group also supports the local food bank, Lake Area Ministries, through their Easter Sunrise Service, as well as hosting the Christmas and Fourth of July parade.

“Sometimes it feels like we do a lot, but then other times it feels like we aren’t doing enough. So, we’re always looking for new things to do and new needs to address,” Santillo said.

Lake Region Kiwanis serves the Keystone Heights and Melrose area. They have more than 30 members and are always welcoming like-minded people to join them. As of now, the Lake Region Kiwanis is working towards making their presence further known in the community. In addition, they are making plans for future fundraisers. “We want people to know we’ve been around for a while and that we’re going to be around for a while,” Santillo said.
