FLEMING ISLAND – A 40-year-old man was charged with taking a well pump and pressure tank because he thought they were about to be thrown away during a move.

James Harold Martinez, of Green Cove Springs, was charged with grand theft after the new owner of a property on U.S. Highway 17 said he saw Martinez work on the well and pump while he was clearing land. According to the arrest report, when the owner returned, they were gone and the well was capped.

A Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputy interviewed Martinez, and he said he didn’t ask about the equipment and thought they were about to be thrown away.

Martinez posted a bond and will be in court on Jan. 2.
