ORANGE PARK - Fleming Island High School state cross country runner Andrew Miller and Orange Park Junior High trackster Mei Chiang both had outstanding pre-season tuneups Saturday afternoon with top finishes at the annual River Day 8K (4.97 miles) road race staged at Grace Episcopal School in Orange Park.
Miller, 17, a junior at Fleming Island High, held off a tough final surge from Jacksonville runner Douglas Baasch, 30, to win in 26 minutes, 51 seconds. Baasch finished in 27:18. Miller’s Golden Eagle teammate, Gage West, 16, took third in 29:17.
For the women, Jacksonville resident Rachel McFarlane, 26, won in 28:09 to finish an impressive third overall just ahead of West, while Chiang finished second in 31:29 for eighth overall in the field of 422 runners. Third woman was Jacksonville’s Lydia McRae, 35, in 31:52.
Master’s titles went to Shawn Svehla, 55, of Hilliard, in 32:11 and Cari Holbrook, 40, of Jacksonville, in 35:31.
Area male runners that took age group honors were, in Men 11-13, Taylen Bader, 12, of Green Cove Springs, in 38:29; in Men 14-19, Kameron Wallizada, 14, of Fleming Island, in 33:36; in Men 40-44, George Simcox, 43, of Middleburg, in 32:22; in Men 45-49, Scott Olivolo, 48, of Middleburg, in 35:17; in Men 70-74, George White, 70, of Orange Park, in 38:26, and, in Men 80-Up, Wellford Reed, 80, of Fleming Island, in 1:10:13.
For the women, age group first were earned by, in Women Under 11, Katherine Tillis, 10, Green Cove Springs, in 43:59; in Women 11-13, Ava Jordan, 12, of Fleming Island, in 43:58; in Women 14-19, Jacqueline Cascante, 14, of Fleming Island, in 40:32; in Women 40-44, Jennifer Szala, 42, of Middleburg, in 39:36; in Women 55-59, Shelli West, 55, of Green Cove Springs, in 45:30, and, in Women 65-69, Dee Robertson-Lee, 66, of Fleming Island, in 57:08.
In the adjoining 5K (3.1 miles) race, Allison Gubitz, 25, of Jacksonville bested the field in 20:50 with Marisa Kortright, 14, of Middleburg, getting second overall just ahead of top male runner Tyler Noble, 15, of Keystone Heights, who took third in 22:21.
