KEYSTONE HEIGHTS – A four run fifth inning assault led to a 6-0 blowout over South Sumter for the Keystone Heights Lady Indians softball team in their region 2-5A quarterfinal Wed., May 3 at Keystone Heights High School.
The Indians shutout was fueled by a sterling performance on the mound from junior hurler Megan Moncrief who collected four strikeouts and just five hits and one walk.
Keystone Heights (19-9) continues in region 2-5A play to their semifinal with a trip to Eustis (23-1) on Tues., May 9. Eustis won a 2-0 decision over 5-5A runnerup Santa Fe to advance.
In the bottom of the region 2-5A bracket, Nature Coast Tech (20-8) will travel to Hernando (20-9) for their semifinal match also on May 9.
After Keystone Heights spotted South Sumter a walk to put a baserunner in play, Indians’ shortstop Molly Crawford and catcher Bailey Story combined forces to shut down a steal attempt to end the inning.
An error on a fly ball to left field from Ashleigh Jennings became Keystone Heights’ first run with Story getting hit by a pitch and Shayla Rollins singling.
In the fourth, Kaitlyn Cline scored after reaching off an error with a Moncrief single to push Keystone Heights up 2-0.
In the fifth, the Indians’ scoring barrage started with Jennings bunting for a single with Story getting a field error in front of an RBI single from Rollins to go up 3-0. Crawford singled in Story for a 4-0 score with Bri Wells singling in Rollis and Crawford to push the score to 6-0.
