DAYTONA BEACH - Middleburg High track and cross country standout graduate Emma Mussante topped off her senior season as one of top distance runner at Florida Southern College with a second place finish in the 5,000 meters at the inaugural Sunshine State Conference track and field championships held at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach on April 19.
In an honor bestowed to the top male and female scholar athletes by Florida Southern College, Mussante, a psychology and sports management major, was named the Pat McFadden Student-Athlete of the Year recipient. Established during the 1991-92 school year, the award is named for former Florida Southern athletics academic counselor Pat McFadden, and is presented to the male and female student-athletes with the best combination of athletic and academic success.
In the 5,000, Mussante finished with a 17:29.04 split to be ninth on the All-Time FSC program record book for the event to score eight team points for the fifth place Mocs. The University of Tampa won the girls title with 157 pints with Embry Riddle second at 114 and Florida Southern fifth with 36 points.
Mussante now has top 10 times for the Florida Southern Indoor track record book in the mile; best in 5:07.80, third in 5:12.87 and sixth at 5:17.22.
Mussante also has the top time in the 3,000 meters in 10:02.11 and the sixth best in 10:38.14 and in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:40.06.
In the 800, Mussante has a seventh best time of 2:21.69.
Mussante is also on the 4,000 distance medley relay top time team with a 13:01.21 and the 1600 meter relay with a 4:22.51.
In outdoor track, Mussante has the top three times in the 5,000 meters with a top time of 17:21.48 with the sixth and seventh best times.
In the 3,000 meters, Mussante has the fifth best career time in 10:27.06.
In the 4 x 400, Mussante and Fleming Island grad Marisa Kortright are on the second fastest squad in program history with a 4:17.35 split.
In the 1500 meters, Mussante has the third, fourth and fifth fastest times with a 4:45.22 her best with teammate Hannah Flemming tops at 4:42.40.
In the 10,000 meters, Mussante is third all time with a 37;02.89.
