ORANGE PARK - After a full day of wrestling with eight teams battling on the first day of competition of the new season, the final tally of the final challenge wound up a criteria tie-breaker between Orange Park and Bartram Trail high schools as the Orange Park Duals kicked off area wrestling with a flurry.
"First week of the season has felt like running on ice," said Orange Park coach Justin Daniels. "We lost to Bartram Trail then Bishop Kenny on Friday (At RHS Panther Prowl) both by criteria. We will hopefully fix some of the issues as we will see both again throughout the season."
Orange Park, with a slew of senior returners from last year's team, opened with wins from Vincent Walker, Cameron Broughton and Diego Soto to get an early 15-0 lead on the Bears, ironically coached by two locals; former Orange Park wrestling coach Chad Parker and former Fleming Island High state runnerup Evan McCall, who is splitting time as head coach at Orange Park Junior High.
At 182, a questionable unsportsmanlike conduct was assessed after a Bears win and a Jacob Campbell major decision at 170 to score the match still in the Raiders favor at 20-9.
Pins from Julian Moore and James McCarthur, pushed the score to 32-9 as Orange Park seemingly took control of the match.
Bartram Trail, though, had other plans as scored a 4-1 pin advantage; Davon Bailey with a Raider pin at 113, to snare the win.
In their earlier matches, Orange Park beat Terry Parker, Pedro Menendez, Nease and Englewood.
