Pace Island's strong Day 2 fuels Planet Swim gold

FIHS Shoesmith siblings dominate day two

PONTE VEDRA BEACH - With a tenuous hold on second place after Day 1 of the two-day Planet Swim First Coast Swim League championships during the weekend, Pace Island coach Jacqueline Kroggel was unwilling to predict a final finish as Day 2 started on Sunday.

Day 1 was for 11-under swimmers, while Day 2 was for 11-up swimmers, with both days combined for the final team scores.

"I don't want to jinx us, but our older swimmers have to come through," said Kroggel.

Pace Island eventually got dominant performances from the brother sister combination of Clara and Williams Shoesmith, both of Fleming Island High, to finish with the overall team championships; girls and boys combined points, with a 2521.5 point total outstretched Timuquana's War Eagle Aquatic Club, which finished second after leading after day one with a 2,256.5 point total. Eagle Harbor's Screaming Eagles finished third at 1977.5.

"William is a state swimmer for Fleming Island High School, and Clara is going to be a dominant swimmer as she enters high school this year as a freshman," Kroggel said.

In the men's division, War Eagle Aquatic Club, from Timuquana and coached by Sondra Santana, won with 1,397.5 points against Pace Island's 1,247. For the girls, Pace Island won against Eagle Harbor, 1,274.5-974 points, with Oakleaf third at 971.5 in a tight battle for those spots. Oakleaf was fifth in combined scores behind Argyle by 12 points; 1,494-1,482.5.

The Shoesmiths' combined for 114 points; 60 for William, 16, with three individual golds; 100 individual medley, 100 free and 50 free, plus a gold in the 200 free relay, while sister Clara, 14, put up 54 points with golds in 200 free relay and 50 fly and silves in 100 IM and 50 breaststroke.

Also garnering a 50-plus point total for Kroggel was 12-year-old Juliet Kroggel, the coach's daughter, who achieved top-three finishes in the 50 free and 200 medley relay, and silvers in the 50 fly and 100 free.

On day one, in the 11-unders competition, Kroggel got a massive performance from eight-year-old Darcy Danisovszky, who won the 25 free, the 25 fly and a third in the 25 breaststroke with a second from the 100 medley relay.

Caitlyn Blair, 11, got Kroggel 52 points on day one with a first in the 100 free, second in the 100IM, third in medley relay and fourth in the 50 back.

"We have grown from a team with 30-40 swimmers a few years ago to a team now with 500 swimmers," said Kroggel, who has been tabbed earlier this summer to take over head swim coaching at St. Johns Country Day School. "I think we make the summer fun yet competitive."

From Eagle Harbor, top performances came from Grady Pitcock, a six-year-old dynamo, who got a first in 25 fly and three silvers: 25 breast, 25 free and the 100 free relay for 54 team points.

Three Screaming Eagles on day two put up 40 points apiece with Caroline Kuhl, 13, getting gold in 25 back and second in 25 fly; Callen Melquist, 11, winning 50 fly and 50 free; and Katelyn Moore, 17, getting four golds in 200 free relay, 50 free, 100 free and 200 medley relay.

Eight-year-old Catherine Kuhl was a 37-point total on the first day, with a first in 25 back, second in 25 fly and fifth in free relay.

For Oakleaf's Orcas swim team, top performances went to Gigi Tomlin, 14, with 57 team points with gold in 50 free and 50 back plus a silver in 50 fly; Gaby Valleroto, 8, with 57 points also on day one with gold in 100 IM and 25 back and silver in 25 free with big brother Martthew Valleroto, 13, earning 44 points off; and Brylee Wood, 15, punching in with 53 team points off a first in 100 back, a second in 100 and a third in 50 free.

Six-year-old Jill Freytag got two golds for Oakleaf with firsts in the 25 free and 25 fly to add 40 team points, with seven-year-old Bentley Sikes adding 47, and eight-year-old Millie Payton adding 43.

Eagle Landing got a handful of 40-plus scorers, but Maxwell Morgan, 8, stole the show with 60 points off first in 100 IM, 25 breast and 25 fly with a fifth in free relay.

Connor Murphy, 17, added 56 on day two with wins in the 50 back and 50 fly and a third in the 100 IM; Lily Tomlin, 10, also went big with 55 points off wins in the 50 breast and 100 free.

Also for Eagle Landing, the Behrendsen family; Laney, 9, and Samuel, 12, added a combined 108 points with both scoring 54 points with wins by both in their 100 IMs; with seconds by Laney in 50 free and 50 fly and Samuel with second in 50 free and 25 breast and a third in free relay.

For Argyle, who finished fourth in combined scores and is coached by Orange Park High swim coach Susan Johnson, top scorers were Alyssa Schwanke, 11, with 37 poits with wins in 50 fly and medley relay, and Jesse Kennelly, 12, with 36 points with a win in 50 breast, second in 200 free relay and third in 100IM.
