Orange Park man jailed for choking woman, fighting with CCSO

ORANGE PARK – A man wanted for choking a woman during a domestic dispute led Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies on a high-speed chase on Blanding Boulevard, Park Avenue, Wells Road and Collins Road. He was stopped when deputies flattened his tires with stop sticks, and he was caught after deputies used their stun guns following a short chase.

Abereon Jamal Brown, 28, of Orange Park, was jailed after being charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, attempting to flee with lights and siren active, battery on a police dog, felony domestic battery by strangulation, violation of pretrial release conditions for domestic violence and driving with a suspended license.

According to the arrest report, four deputies wrestled with Brown after he was caught in the First Coast Baptist Church parking lot. K-9 Mak was used, and Brown put his arm around Mak’s neck to choke the animal, causing Mak to yelp in pain and disengage.

Brown was treated at HCA Florida Orange Park Hospital for a dog bite and released.

His bond was set at $350,015. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 20.

CCSO: Motorcyclist busted for drugs during traffic stop

ORANGE PARK – A motorcyclist was stopped on Foxridge Center Drive on Monday, Sept. 22, because his bookbag obscured his license tag, and eventually led a Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputy to the discovery of methamphetamine, fentanyl, crack cocaine, drug paraphernalia and a weapon.

According to the arrest report, Dean Alan Kevin Rockwood, 33, of Jacksonville, was also charged with operating his motorcycle with a suspended license and violating an injunction for domestic violence by having the firearm.

The CCSO deputy saw Rockwood try to “pedal the motorcycle in a backwards motion to refrain from entering the right of way onto Camp Francis Johnson once he observed my patrol vehicle.” When Rockwood turned, the deputy noticed the tag was obscured, so he conducted a stop.

A background check revealed the injunction, and Rockwood admitted he had a pistol tucked in his waistband. That led to a search, where the drugs were discovered. Once he was taken to the Clay County Jail, detention deputies uncovered a small knife and a $10 bill in his jeans, which led to an additional charge of smuggling contraband into jail.

Rockwood’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 28. His bond was set at $71,018.
