Clay High long time football and track coach as among his sports Ron Riddle got back to what he enjoyed the most at the Clay High track with a Fish Fry lunch as part of the return to the Ron Riddle Track Invitational. Though the event was small and quick and just a track running competition between just a few schools, the feel was very competitive with both 1600 races coming down to final stretch sprint finishes.
Clay High athletic director Jared Moses noted that the meet was a return of one of the more popular track events in Clay County, but that also a vision for coach Riddle to return to the newly refurbished and rubberized track at Clay High School.
"This is all his vision to bring track back to Clay High School," said Moses, as Clay, Middleburg, Bradford and Eustis from Orlando competed on the new rubberized track.
Riddle coached for 37 years at Clay and a pioneer as one of the the first Black teachers in Florida.
Riddle taught physical education and coached a host of Blue Devil sports including a Class B state football championship in 1967. Riddle was also on the sidelines of the Blue Devils football team that finished as Class 5A runnerups in 2013 under coach Josh Hoekstra.
Riddle, and the Ron Riddle track meet, took a hiatus after the COVID pandemic in 2020.
