JACKSONVILLE – St. John’s Country Day head softball coach Deric Enter thought that University Christian would change things up considering this was the third time these teams have played this season.
Fortunately that was not the case.
“I thought they would play more small ball by bunting and forcing us to make plays,” Enter said. “These teams know each other really well so we have to mix it up.”
Junior righty Brianna Enter threw a complete game retiring nine of the last 10 batters and stroked a triple and an RBI single and scored two runs to power the Spartans to a 7-1 victory over University Christian to capture the District 2-3A title Friday night at University Christian.
The Spartans, which won the district in 2016, move on to host North Florida Christian on May 3 in the Regional Quarterfinals.
The game was tied at 1-1 going into the bottom of the third when the Spartans exploded for four runs and moved out to a commanding 5-1 advantage. They sent nine players to the plate drawing three walks, and RBI single by Enter and scored two runs on wild pitches.
“We got off to a rough start but Brianna hit her spots and gave us what we needed,” said Enter.
Enter struck out six and induced five infield outs over the last four innings to close out The Fighting Christians.
“The first time I faced them I was able to dominate them, but they made adjustments in our second matchup. I wanted to focus on hitting my spots and letting my defense make plays behind me,” said Brianna Enter.
