FLEMING ISLAND – It's small, blue, colorful and filled with special treats.
Can you guess what it may be?
Salty Air Treats is open every weekend as a sweet tooth haven. It’s not too hard to find, and the pop-up box sits most days, waiting boldly for those who dare to try something new.
Jordan Toon began the small business a few months ago tosatisfy her passion for baking and bring a little joy to her neighborhood.
As the former owner of Elder Bee, she originally spent her time making handcrafted soaps and other healthy living products. However, her recent pregnancy, she said, made it difficult to keep up with business.
So, she turned to her love of baking as a solution.
“I started baking a lot while I was pregnant,” Toon said. “And, after she was born, my dad got me this cart because these carts are becoming popular online.”
Located between Cobblestone at Eagle Harbor and the Pine Lake neighborhood, the cart is completely self-served and open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
From cookies and mini cakes to cake pops, Toon said all her products are freshly made and sold on weekends. Walk-up customers are able to choose from a variety of flavors, including Cookie Butter, Dr. Popper, Fruity Cereal and Cookie Dough.Items are $4 each or bundled together at 10 for $3.
“People come and they get their cake pops and their cookies,” she said. “At first it was a little thing, but I’m really enjoying it.”
As a stay-at-home mom, Toon said she has mastered the balancing act between .. In between naps, you can find her baking four to five cakes every Friday morning, while also prepping toppings, dipping chocolates and packaging all treats. By the time the weekend rolls around, so does the cart.
A camera perched at the top allows for an efficient honor system to be in place, Toon said. And she’s found that the self-serve aspect of the cart has positively affected the way that people interact with her business.
“I feel like it just gives people freedom to sit there and scroll what’s in the cart and everything without feeling pressured,” she said.
With the help of social media, customers travel across the county to get a taste of Salty Air Treats. Toon said it amazes her that people truly look forward to her delicacies. Regulars young and old flock to the cart from the time it opens to the time it closes. Her goal, she said, is to make the experience as welcoming as possible. That’s why she also added free coloring pages as an interactive element for children.
Toon’s next goal, she said, is to purchase a trailer. All a step-by-step plan to eventually open her own bakery.
But, for now, the special pop-up cart is here to stay.
“It makes me happy, knowing that everybody’s looking forward to the cart every weekend.”
