• The Orange Park Town Council remained divided, 2-2, between Daniel Cobriero and Virginia Hall to replace Connie Thomas, who resigned to concentrate on her run for the county commission.

• Hope Therapy in Middleburg helps people with debilitating illnesses by offering patients horses to ride as part of their rehabilitation.

• Juvenile offenders can opt for a program that turns a criminal charge into a civil one to keep them from having a criminal record.

• U.S. Navy SEAL Chief Petty Officer Jacques Jules Fontan of Orange Park is laid to rest after being killed fighting terrorism in Afghanistan.

• More than 100 residents weren’t happy after hearing the latest version of the master plan for Lake Asbury on July 11 from Clay County Planning Director Thad Crowe to address urban sprawl, suitability, public facilities and transportation.

• Residents on Quince Court, in Orange Park in the Fourakers neighborhood, report flood waters encroached their homes following storms during the July 2 weekend. They blamed trash and unkept drainage ditches as the reason.

30 years ago, 1995

• The Town of Orange Park’s Planning and Zoning Board approved a request to rezone 88 acres near the intersection of Gano and DeBarry avenues for the construction of 210 new homes.

• The Board of County Commissioners grappled with how to recoup $100,000 in stolen workers’ compensation funds following the arrest of county risk manager Rafael Diaz.

• The sheriff’s office transferred 16 prisoners to the Hamilton County Jail after being cited for overcrowding in May.

40 years ago, 1985

• Dana Ibach, 24, was indicted by a Clay County Grand Jury for first-degree murder following the stabbing death of her husband, Westberry Griffs III, in Orange Park.

• Charles Jimmy Carter of Jacksonville is captured nearly six months following his escape from the Clay County Jail.

• Clay County School Board Chair Martha Maxwell created a controversy by challenging Superintendent Ann Wiggins’ proposal to spend $115,000 to hire 10 health aides. Maxwell said it was more important for the district to find $400,000 to build an elementary school in Lake Asbury to address overcrowding.
