• Michelle Cook was appointed Clay County Sheriff by Gov. Ron DeSantis to complete Darryl Daniels’ term. She won the primary on Aug. 15 after Daniels was suspended after he was charged with a felony and three misdemeanors in connection with an affair following an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

• Courtney Laird becomes the first girl to earn the rank of Eagle Scout in Clay County.

• AMVETS Post 86 gives Middleburg High Vice Principal Justin Williams an accommodation after he rescued the U.S. flag taken from the post by a disgruntled man.

10 years ago, 2015

• School board members hear from teachers after not getting pay raises for years.

• Middleburg High’s Cody Carroll wins the Clay County boys’ golf championship at the Magnolia Point Golf and Country Club in Green Cove Springs.

• The Clay County Planning Commission asks the county commissioners to examine a policy that would require residents to obtain permits for backyard chickens.

• Sheriff Rick Beseler uses a new weapon called DART – Drug Abatement Response Team – that brings together law enforcement, fire, utilities and other social services agencies to target unsafe areas, to arrest 10 people on drug-related charges on Lemon Street in Green Cove Springs.

• A man featured on “America’s Most Wanted” was arrested while he was standing in the checkout line at the Middleburg Winn-Dixie store. William Floyd Lane, 64, of Tyler, Texas, was wanted for molesting an 8-year-old relative.

• A truckload of supplies was gathered at the Salvation Army to be sent to Hurricane Katrina victims in Alabama.
