• The Oakleaf High girls basketball team beats Timber Creek to win the 1-7A championship.

• The Keystone Heights girls’ color guard wins first place at the high school drill meet at Matanzas High, while the boys regulation armed squad finishes third.

• The First Coast Quilters Guild presents “love quilts” to members of Challenge Enterprises.

• The State allocates $2.5 million to short up the Clay County District Schools' finances.

• Planned Unit Development announces it hopes to build a waterfront restaurant with boat slips and single-family homes on the Southwest corner of the Black Creek Bridge.

• Citing increases in costs estimated by as much as $1 million each, the Clay County School Board votes to delay construction of Elementary School X in Lake Asbury, but continued work on a K-8 school for Oakleaf and Coppergate elementaries.

• The Clay County Sheriff’s Office investigates the shooting of an 18-year-old across Blanding Boulevard in the Pine Tree Plaza.

• Co-founder of the Citizens for Term Limits and Accountability Committee Jane Padgett says the group was considering seeking approval of a ballot initiative to allow citizens to decide if they wanted to add two new positions to the Board of County Commission.

• Janie B. Sharp of Green Cove Springs dies in surgery at University Medical Center in Jacksonville from injuries she sustained in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 17 near Haven Avenue.

• Keystone Heights High journalism teacher Susan Sailor is selected as Clay County Teacher of the Year. She will compete for Florida Teacher of the Year.

• Clay County Supervisor of Secondary Education Jud Wilhelm presents school board members with a plan to establish the district’s first International Baccalaureate Program at Clay High for 50 students a year.

40 years ago, 1986

• Clay County Supervisor of Elections Dorothy Holt verifies that Orange Park residents have collected enough signatures to conduct a recall election for Vice Mayor Byrd Marshall and council members Hance Bruce and David Brownell.

• Superintendent Ann Wiggins asks School Board members to join 13 other school districts seeking an advisory opinion from the Circuit Court in Tallahassee regarding equitable school funding during a special meeting.

• Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Labor Relations Martin Miller announces after serving as a teacher contract negotiator for more than 11 years that he no longer wanted those duties.
