• The Green Cove Springs City Council accepted a report from a resident’s committee to create a mural program to highlight the city’s beauty.

• The Town of Penney Farms announced it would use $100,000 from a state grant to build a passive park for residents.

• The Clay County School Board reached a tentative contract agreement with the Clay County Education Association for a 13.3% increase in pay and benefits.

• The Orange Park Town Council amended its current budget by adding $1.3 million needed to fund paving, drainage, water and sewage projects.

30 years ago, 1996

• The Keystone Heights City Council unanimously accepted $84,123, a 7% increase compared to 1995, in services offered by Clay County as part of an interlocal agreement.

• Orange Park resident Melissa Moses, 28, who graduated from Orange Park High, finished fourth in the women’s three-meter diving competition at the 1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta.

• Clay County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Wes Gronikowski said four W.E. Cherry Elementary students were sentenced to scrub, sweep and mop at school after breaking in and stealing a box of party favors, coins and candy.

 40 years ago, 1986

• Middleburg realtor Susan “Soozi’ Weigel announced she will run against incumbent Republican Florida Rep. Chance Irvine.

• Michael Gustaf Nordgren of Lake Asbury was charged with criminal mischief after he was accused of spitting snuff onto a Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputy’s bulletproof vest.

• Clay County School Board Chairman George Bush said he was subpoenaed in a lawsuit filed by Superintendent Ann Wiggins, who said the school board exceeded their authority by rejecting the transfer of seven district administrators.
