• Nearly 40,000 students returned to one of 42 Clay County District Schools for the first day of classes on Aug. 10.

• The School Board refuses to act on proposals from proponents and opponents of whether to mandate masks during the COVID-19 pandemic because Gov. Ron DeSantis had already issued an order that restricts mandates.

• Moosehaven prepares for its 100th anniversary in 2022 by planting 25 new Live Oak trees on campus.

• Residents of Spencer Plantation in Argyle Forest plead with the Board of County Commissioners about a plan to build a playground in an area that is plotted as a parking lot.

• Former Clay High swimmer Caeleb Dressel won his first gold medal at the Summer Olympic Games at Rio de Janeiro in the 4-by-100 freestyle relay.

• The school board calls off a meeting in the wake of fraud allegations against Superintendent Charlie Van Zant.

20 years ago, 2006

• The Clay Chamber of Commerce is pleased that all seven school board candidates will attend a debate at Fleming Island High.

• Clay County received $20 million from the St. Johns River Water Management District for three different wastewater projects.

• The county rolls out its new website that contains more information that’s available with drop down menus versus A-to-Z searches.

30 years ago, 1996

• The University of Florida and the Florida Wine and Grape Growers Association announced that Aug. 24 would be the date for the inaugural Muscadine Grape Festival to be held on Fleming Island at Tiger Holmes’ Holmes Vineyard.

• Clay County fire officials said 25 firefighters worked to rescue two-year-old Chelsea Suskala from a fire that trapped her in her parents’ home in the 3000 block of Mitchells Road, north of Green Cove Springs.

• Keystone Heights Mayor Archie Green presented the Lake Region Kiwanis Club with a key to the city for all of its hands-on work making the city a great place to live.


40 Years Ago, 1986
• Green Cove Springs City Council postponed final approval of the Cove subdivision on Houston Street saying more time was needed to review the project’s engineering plans.

• Green Cove Springs photographer Rick Bauer and Middleburg model Kathleen Leisure Burnett won first place in a statewide Ms. Photogenic of Florida photo contest.
