• Sheriff Michelle Cook pleaded with the County Commission to expand the jail, telling them, “We’re literally packing them in there.”

• The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Elijah Devonte Lewis for openly possessing a firearm without a concealed carry permit, and they arrested others involved in a fight at the Magic Midway at the Orange Park Mall. CCSO also said six or seven shots were fired during the melee.

• The BCC said the lowest bid of $3.5 million for a new county gun range was more than they wanted to spend.

10 years ago, 2016

• Darryl Daniels and Addison Davis win their primaries for sheriff and superintendent, as voters ousted incumbent Charlie Van Zant for superintendent; Mary Bolla defeated incumbent Johnna McKinnon for School Board and Charlie Cofer turned back incumbent Matt Shirk for the Public Defender’s office.

• Delmar and Opal Lewis of Green Cove Springs celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.

• Car and RV dealership owner Clayton E. Revels, 86, who helped put Green Cove Springs on the map as “Little Detroit,” dies.

20 years ago, 2006

• Supervisor of Elections Barbara Kirkman predicted a dismal 20% turnout for the primary.

• The Clay County District Schools planned public meetings with local governments to explain interlocal agreements and how it will keep developers from building homes faster than a school district can build schools.

• Orthopedic surgeon Patrick Hutton was elected to serve as the President of the Florida Medical Association.

30 years ago, 1996

• LeAnn Shannon of Orange Park set a world record in the 400-meter wheelchair race, and she won gold medals in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter race and a silver in the 800-meters at the Paralympics in Atlanta.

• The Florida Highway Patrol charged John Eric Gannon of Green Cove Springs with DUI manslaughter after he caused a two-vehicle crash that killed Carolyn A. Knight and Lindley Lawrence, both of Orange Park.

• Moosehaven resident Elsie Gordon celebrated her 104th birthday.

40 years ago, 1986

• EWP Construction of Jacksonville won the $424,624 bid to repave Branan Field Road from Old Jennings Road to Havenwood Road in Argyle.

• Betsy Annette Harris of Orange Park was sentenced to 48 months in state prison for DUI manslaughter in the death of Jeff Lynn Farley.

• Attorneys for Orange Park Athletic Association coach B.J. Lakin agreed to settle for $475,000 after Lakin was struck by lightning during a baseball practice and ended up in a coma.
