Five years ago, 2018

• The county was engrossed in months of deliberations regarding funding for the Clay Council on Aging (CCA) and its ability to provide senior citizens transportation, which culminated in ElderSource terminating its contract with CCA, opting instead to partner with Aging True from Duval County.

• In a letter to the editor, Al Rizer, former executive director of CCA who was fired nearly two months before, abashed the Board of County Commissioners for stringent funding of public transportation, which impacted the ability of CCA to provide public services and resulted in the nonprofit losing its contract to ElderSource.

 

 

10 years ago, 2013

• In response to the growing popularity of e-cigarette sales, the Town of Orange approved an ordinance that aimed to keep the next-gen products away from minors under 18, the then-legal age to use tobacco products.

• Commissioner Wendell Davis ascended to chairman of the Board of County Commissioners while Commissioner Diane Hutchings assumed the position of vice chairwoman.

 

 

20 years ago, 2003

• Clay County Habitat for Humanity held a grand opening for its Re-Store Home Improvement thrift store on Blanding Boulevard. The facility would also serve as the nonprofit’s new headquarters.

• The Clay Historical Society presented its “Holiday History Mystery Tour” of 14 historic homes and sites in Green Cove Springs as part of the annual “Christmas on Walnut Street” event.

 

 

 

30 years ago, 1993

• Clay Co. Sheriff Scott Lancaster held a press conference at FDLE headquarters in Jacksonville where he announced a task force had been set up to investigate the brutal killing of two hunters. He warned hunters to travel in pairs and keep family abreast of their whereabouts.

• About 200 Clay County Public Schools teachers attended a rally at Middleburg High School where the Clay County Education Association members protested the school board’s 4.7 percent raise.

 

 

40 years ago, 1983

• A proposal made by the Town of Orange Park Charter Review Commission called for rescheduling its 1985 election, as well as electing the mayor by popular vote instead of from within the Council.

• The Florida Highway Patrol investigated a two-vehicle head-on collision in the Ridgewood area. Two of the five passengers were life-flighted by helicopter to Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville.
