• The U.S. Department of Justice honors Fourth Judicial Circuit State Attorney Melissa Nelson for her support of the Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative.

• Clay County Habitat for Humanity and local partners work together to provide gifts for 41 county children in need.

• A week after Orange Park’s Nuisance Abatement Board sought to close the Rodeway Inn and Conference Center for repeated violations and nuisance calls for drug and illegal activities, CenterState Bank of Florida files paperwork seeking to foreclose on the remainder of a $2.6 million mortgage.

• Lloyd White, 37, and his wife, Bobbi Lee White, 47, both of Middleburg, are charged with murder after Corey Bryan Lane, 35, of Jacksonville, was found charred in an abandoned van.

• Clay County Agricultural Fair General Manager Pete Sutton announces his retirement, while Town of Orange Park Special Events Coordinator Tasha Hyder is selected to replace him.

20 years ago, 2005

• Clay Sheriff Rick Beseler presents a Fleming Island mom with a Life Saver Award for jumping into Doctors Lake to rescue a young boy from a sinking car. Melissa Hawkinson pulled 5-year-old Cameron Dorsey from the car driven by his father.

• State health officials approve a $128 million plan by Orange Park Medical Center to build a new hospital at U.S. Highway 17 and State Road 16 in Green Cove Springs, paving the way for what many experts considered would be a legal battle involving St. Vincent’s Medical Center and Baptist Health, whose similar applications were denied.

30 Years Ago, 1995

• Officials from Solite say its decision to close its Russell Road area plant in Clay County was based on economic reasons and had nothing to do with ongoing opposition from environmental groups.

• The Clay County School Board votes 5-0 to provide $1 million to help construct a performing arts center on the campus of St. Johns River State College.

• Quigley House’s fundraising program “Every Woman Can…” raises $41,000, a 17% increase from 1994 numbers.

40 Years Ago, 1985

• In what was called a surprise move, the Orange Park Town Council votes 3-2 to hire Larry Daniel Myers as its new town manager in the wake of the abrupt demotion of Joyce Bryan from that position.

• New information leads court officials to delay the start of the murder trial of James W. Ortagus, who was charged with the shooting death of Ellis Fowler. Police said the shooting took place at Vito’s Pizza at 2688 Blanding Blvd.

• Clay County Public Safety Director James Corbin Jr. says a sinkhole in Keystone Heights had doubled to 70 feet wide in three hours, swallowing a house and forcing residents of four other nearby homes to evacuate.
