MIDDLEBURG - A sprint to the finish line proved to be the order of the day as the annual Black Creek 5K road race in Middleburg ended with a flying flurry to the finish line for the top two runners.
Thomas Daly, 26, and Danial Swenson, 27, battled shoulder to shoulder for most of the 3.1 miles of the Black Creek 5K trek before Daly blasted the final 80 yards to claim the win in 17 minutes, 14.3 seconds with Swenson trailing in just 17:17.1. Third place went to Middleburg veteran runner John McColl, 34, and a past winner, who crossed the line in17:57.1.
For the women, Orange Park’s Jessica Jewell, 35, won in 21:06 with Shannon Campbell, 24, in second at 21:20.5 with teenager Hannah Johnson, 13, in third at 21:52.2.
Male age group winners were Skylar Gray in Male 3-10 in 24:48.9; Luke Bybee, in Male 11-14, in 21:02.3; Elias Perez, in Male 15-19, in 19:23.0; Clayton Broadwell, in Male 20-24, in 20:48.1; Michael Patch, the Black Creek 5K race director, in Male 25-29, in 21:46.2; Middleburg High teacher Paul Grybb, in Male 30-34, in 18:31.4; Stephen Larson, in Male 35-39, in 22:02.3; Jordan Navarro, in Male 40-44, in 19:32.3; Todd Hull, in Male 45-49, in 21:13.4; Kevin Huaman, in Male 50-54, in 20:26.7; Steve Smith, in Male 55-59, in 24:00.5, and Terry Lawrence, in Male 60-Over, in 26:36.3.
