FLEMING ISLAND – Runners, walkers and supporters made sure the first of three legs of Clay County’s fundraising drive to support and encourage its Special Olympic team was a success on Friday, March 27.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run attracted more than 100 who left the Hibernia Publix on a 2.3-mile journey throughout Fleming Island, ending at the Plantation Sports Complex, where participants received medals and were treated to the opportunity to buy lunch by G’s Slow-Cooked Barbecue.
The Torch Run is one of three primary fundraisers to send Special Olympics athletes to the Florida State Games at the Wide World of Sports at Walt Disney World. The other two are Tip-A-Cop events at the Texas Roadhouse in Orange Park and Longhorn Steakhouse on Fleming Island.
The route traversed from Publix to the Black Creek Bike Trail on U.S. Highway 17, Village Square Parkway, Town Center Boulevard, Old Hard Road and into the Plantation Sports Complex.
Supporters can still buy Torch Run T-shirts and challenge coins by calling organizer CCSO Lt. Zachary Cox at (904) 445-0521.
