GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Many at last Saturday’s Vietnam Veterans Day recognition ceremony returned home more than 50 years ago. And too often, they came home of a nation that was indifferent and indignant about their mission. More that 200 came to the Historic Triangle at the Old Courthouse to change that by recognizing their service and sacrifices. The 90-minute ceremony was filled with patriotic salutes and comments from federal, state and local officials. “We don't want to forget them,” said county commissioner Jim Renninger, who spent 26 years in the U.S. Navy. “We want to thank them for their service. What we want them to know is it was all worth it.” Florida Sen. Jennifer Bradley was the keynote speaker. She spoke of her father, who was a Vietnam veteran. “There's a special bond, especially a brotherhood among Vietnam veterans. I've witnessed it with my father and the relationships, and I see here today. Certainly, that includes the ones who are fighting beside you.” More than 58,000 U.S. soldiers, sailors and pilots died in the Vietnam War, including 21 from Clay County.
