Girls’ and Boys’ 18s singles titles last Friday, headlining the American juniors to win singles

Shelton was a 2019 Florida Class 4A runnerup in singles and doubles for Buchholz High School. Zapp was a Class 4A singles runnerup in 2018 for Fleming Island High School.

The National Winter Championships were played at the USTA National Campus at Lake

Nona in Orlando, Fla., (18s and 16s divisions) and the Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson,

Ariz., (14s and 12s divisions) consisting of 128 singles players and 64 doubles teams across

all age groups.

Zapp added another title to his resume, as the No. 1 seed claimed the boys’ 18s singles title.

A semifinalist at last year’s event, the Florida native took down Ben Shelton (17, Gainesville,

Fla.), 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 6-4 in the final. Meanwhile, Ben’s older sister, Emma, defeated the No.1

seed, Sarah Hamner of Fort Collins, Colo., 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 in the girls’ 18s single final to earn

her first USTA national title.

With their victories, both teens earned wild card entries into future tournaments through the

USTA’s merit-based competitive pathway linkages.

Zapp, as the boys’ 18s singles champion,

received one wild card entry into the main draw of a future ITF World Tennis Tour M15 event

in the U.S.
