Ask Kyla: Why are the senior graduations at the same time?

A resident was curious as to why all senior graduations within Clay County District Schools happen to be scheduled for the same day and time.

This year, most seniors within the county's traditional high schools will commemorate their achievement on Friday, May 23, at 8 p.m. (with the exception of Ridgeview High School, whose ceremony will commence May 22 at 6 p.m. at UNF; Clay Virtual Academy on May 23 at 3 pm in the Ridgeview High cafeteria; and Bannerman Learning Center's Elevation Academy on May 27 at 5 p.m. in the Fleming Island High School cafeteria).

For those who may have multiple family members or loved ones graduating from various schools within the district, the resident said the multiple ceremonies could complicate the ability to watch graduates all walk across their respective stages.

After consulting with the school district, I was told that having the graduations this way has been a longstanding tradition within the county. They added that having it on a Friday also helps with families who are making travel arrangements for out-of-town guests.

For those who may want to experience the joy of watching more than one student officially get their diploma, the district will also be live-streaming all ceremonies, which will stay on each school's channel — something they began doing during the pandemic.
