GREEN COVE SPRINGS - County Commissioners approved a $21.5 million bid for the construction of a new county animal shelter on Tuesday.
The Clay County Animal Services Shelter and Care Facility is a long-awaited project. The one-story facility will be located in Middleburg.
With more people and their pets moving to the county, the board noted that it’s important to have efficient resources to care for them.
The county chose the lowest bid from E. Vaughan Rivers, Inc., in a re-bid. The local contractor has worked on other projects in the county. The approval was passed in a 5-0 vote.
Although the bid totaled $6 million greater than the allocated CIP budget, the county assured that revenue would flow back in to make up the deficit, and no existing projects would be sacrificed.
The BCC also approved a letter of intent to further negotiate a $1 million sponsorship from Lincoln Memorial University. This sponsorship will assist with educational and surgical spaces within the shelter.
In other news, many local veterans were recognized ahead of Veterans Day in an official proclamation.
This year, the county will participate in the National Association of Counties’ Operation Green Light for Veterans. From Nov. 4-11, all county government buildings will be lit green to honor veterans worldwide.
