MIDDLEBURG – The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said a traffic stop for a man not having a license tag light shortly before midnight on Dec. 20 turned into a high-speed chase ended when a man was caught hiding in a wooded area on Peppergrass Street.
According to the arrest report, Santana China Smith, 29, of Middleburg, was arrested after he fled from a sheriff’s office deputy on County Road 218.
After Smith left his car when he reached a dead end, and he ran into the woods. K-9 Cash joined deputies in apprehending him.
Smith was charged with attempting to flee and elude law enforcement while they had their lights and siren active, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license. A deputy spotted a handgun on the front passenger seat of Smith’s car. He was convicted in 2018 of possessing molly or ecstasy.
His bond was set at $57,511.
