CHS Bunton leads Armada in second half win

Posted

JACKSONVILLE - Clay High soccer grad Brooke Bunton accounted for two scores; one a goal, the other an assist, to break a 1-1 halftime tie for the Jacksonville Armada women's soccer team that finished off a 3-1 win against Florida Gulf Coast Saturday night at Edward Waters University.
Bunton, who will travel with the USA Women's U-23 team in a week, broke the tie off a Lilly Morris breakaway, goalie crash, spin, and tap-in goal near the end of the first half that got answered quickly by Gulf Coast on a breakaway to knot the game.
In the second half, Bunton broke away on a one-on-one with the Gulf Coast goalie, but enticed the goalie out of the net before tapping to Jianna Ramirez on her left side for the go-ahead goal.
Moments later, Bunton entered the box with her right foot, spun, and blasted a 15-yard laser to the top right corner of the goal to put an insurance run on the scoreboard. The goal was Bunton's third of the season.
Not on the field for the Armada team was another Clay High grad, Liz Fogarty, who was out, but is one of the lead scorers for the Armada, including a recent hat trick. Fogarty's seven-season goals currently lead the division.
On the Armada defense set are also Oakleaf grad Kylie Overstreet as a sideline defender and Fleming Island High junior goalie Emily Poucher. Fleming Island High grad Sophie Pontieri, now at University of North Florida as a forward, is also on the Armada roster, but did not suit up against Gulf Coast. Pontieri has four goals.
The Armada opened their season with a 3-0 win over Seminole Ice, a 4-4 tied with defending champion West Florida Flames, an 11-0 win (Fogarty's hat trick) over AGC Football in Miami, a 5-0 win over FC Prime Time, the lost 2-1 to Florida Premiere FC, beat Fusion FC 7-0, then the 3-1 win Saturday over Florida Gulf Coast.
The Armada continues with Seminole Ice on Friday, June 27, in their final, with a win and help from their schedule, determining Sunshine Conference playoff possibilities.

The winners of the Women's Premier Soccer League win the Jerry Zanelli Cup.
