FLEMING ISLAND - The No. 9-seeded Florida State University baseball team rallied with two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to beat Mississippi State 5-2 and win the Tallahassee Regional to advance to the Super Regional on a memorable Sunday night at Dick Howser Stadium.
The Seminoles took the lead in the eighth on a two-RBI single by junior center fielder Max Williams, a Clay High graduate, and added an insurance run one pitch later on a single by freshman first baseman Myles Bailey.
With the dramatic comeback win, the Seminoles (41-14) advance to their 19th Super Regional, the most all-time. The No. 9-seed (41-14) Florida State baseball team's postseason run will continue at No. 8-seeded Oregon State (45-13-1) in a best-of-three series at the Corvallis Super Regional from June 6-8. This is FSU's 19th NCAA Super Regional, the most all-time, and OSU's ninth. Both teams are playing in a Super Regional for the second year in a row.
In their previous region games, FSU had a 6-2 win over Bethune-Cookman, a 10-3 win over Mississippi State and a 5-2 win over Mississippi State.
Against Bethune-Cookman, Williams was one of three players to hit a homer with Williams blasting his team leading 18th four-bagger.
In the 10-3 win over Mississippi State, Williams had an RBI single in the ninth to finish the scoring at 10-3.
In the second win over Mississippi State, a 5-2 game, a two RBI single by Williams gave the Seminoles the 4-2 lead and added one more off a single from teammate Myles Bailey.
The team leader in game-winning hits going into the weekend, Williams is now tied atop the leaderboard again with eight on the season. He has three game-winning RBI in the eighth inning or later.
