JACKSONVILLE – Calling them “the best of the best,” U.S. Rep. Aaron Bean proudly honored 19 students, including six from Clay County schools, who earned nominations to U.S. Military Academies on March 7. Fleming Island High’s Crerar was nominated to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy; Middleburg High’s Tyler Crook was nominated to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy, and Joy Nolte was nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy; Ridgeview High’s Raelynn Walker was nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy; Oakleaf’s Preston Lewis was nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy; and Bishop John J. Snyder High's Kairi Bonzo was nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy.
The nominating committee included current Green Cove Springs City Councilman, retired U.S. Army Col. Matt Johnson, current Clay County Commissioner, and retired U.S. Navy Capt. Jim Renninger and current Clay County Manager, former NAS JAX Commander and retired U.S. Navy Capt. Howard Wanamaker. The ceremony was held at Cecil Center's Florida State College at Jacksonville.
