GREEN COVE SPRINGS - A 66 yard third quarter first play from quarterback Teaghan Moses to 6'-4" wide receiver Charlotte Andrus highlighted a 7-6 flag football district championship win for Clay High against a tough Ridgeview High Thursday night at Clay High School.
"I just made the catch and saw green grass," said Andrus, who also had a first period interception. Clay quarterback Teaghan Moses ran in the PAT point for an explosive 7-0 lead.
For Clay and Fleming Island, the route has been treacherous with the Blue Devils surviving the 7-6 district championship win over Ridgeview while the Golden Eagles held a 12-0 halftime lead on Fletcher before falling 13-12 at Ponte Vedra High. Fleming Island got touchdown passes to Emily Poucher and Seven Gourdet, but failed on both PAT attempts. Fletcher defeated Bartram Trail 25-19 in the district final.
Keystone Heights, with a flurry of close games against top teams in the latter part of their season; 13-12 wins over Suwannee and Columbia plus two wins to finish the season with a 9-8 record. Keystone Heights lost 20-6 to Santa Fe in their district semifinal, but secured a sixth seed for the region.
Unfortunately, the Indians will face off against No. 3 Bradford (12-2), who blew out a 53-0 win over Newberry in their district semifinal and a final 14-0 win over Santa Fe for the district title. Bradford beat Keystone Heights 45-12 in March.
Clay High's flag football team will not see their usual rivals in the region playoffs, but the likes of Choctawhatchee and ED White could be on the docket in the state semifinals or finals as the Blue Devils new place in region 2 of Class 2A brings new faces to Green Cove Springs for region action. Clay advances to host Orlando Jones in their first round region game on Wednesday, April 23.
Against Ridgeview, with both teams scoring a combined 79 points the night before in their semifinal games, the one score night was indicative of solid defensive play on both sides as both teams battled to a 0-0 halftime score.
"It comes down to extra points," said Clay coach Jared Moses, now 12-0. "We had that play with Charlotte, but haven't used it much."
Ridgeview had plenty of opportunity to steal the game with quarterback Emma Rayes creating plays throughout the night including a two final throws to Nacoya Blocton; one a 15 yarder to the Clay 13 yard line with less than 20 seconds in the game and one in the end zone that Blocton could not quite get a hold off with her feet still in bounds.
