TALLAHASSEE - Fleming Island High cross country ace Emma Millson kept to her frontrunning ways with a top finish for the Golden Eagles Saturday morning at the FSU Pre-State Invitational Elite race held on the Florida state championship course.

For Millson, the result was a 14th place finish overall in 19 minutes, 34.30 seconds, as the first Fleming Island finisher, but the new look was a resurgent finish by senior Marisa Kortright. Kortright, was has been withing earshot of Millson and Grace Adams for most of the season, took her turn as the sidekick to Millson with a 15th place finish in 19:38.10 as the Golden Eagles girls teams took fourth against a high-powered field that included team champions Winter Springs, Circle Christian School, the Class 1A runnerup last year after back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018, and Leon High. Winter Springs, the Class 3A defending champions, won with 49 points with 72 and 77 points rounding the top three and Fleming Island at 90. Lakewood Ranch finished fifth at 94.

Caroline Wells of Winter Springs, the 3A runnerup last year with a 17:59.3 time, was overall champion at 17:24.20 on the same Appalachee State Course. Circle Christian was led by Class 1A champion Sinkenesh Parker in second in 18:31.40. Eleanor Tymorek of Saint Andrews High was third in 18:37.90.

For the Golden Eagles' girls, behind Kortright, junior Mei Chiang may be hitting her stride to be in the mix up front with a 20:02.20 split for 22nd place. Adams was 25th in 20:13.70 with sophomore Anna Rafalski fifth in at 21:32.80 for 42nd.

For the boys, the return of senior Kameron Wallizada proved prophetic as the hard-charging rumbler had his best race in nearly two years with a 16:39.50 effort after dealing with various injuries since his outstanding first two years for the Golden Eagles.

Wallizada's split was far away from overall champion Javier Vento of Belen Jesuit Prep's 15:21 who led Jesuit to a 1-2-4 finish and the team title with an astounding 31 points. Fleming Island was seventh at 185.

Fleming Island got outstanding running from sophomore Danny Sakowski who was 41st in 17:02l.30 with teammates Jayden Scherer and Alex Bendig just three seconds behind in 42nd and 43rd.
