CLAY COUNTY – The first 2020 Presidential debate was last week and it sure created fireworks.

If you were on social media the day after the debate or even during it, you likely witnessed an onslaught of messages ranging from, “these are our two choices?” to “this is childish” or even “this is pointless.” Critics on both sides seemed to agree on one thing the following day: not much came of this debate. Clay Today asked its readers what they thought for the Facebook Question of the Week and they seemed to echo the same sentiment.

“It was the most embarrassing display of the American political system I’ve experienced in my lifetime,” resident Domenic Musco said.

Resident Susan Jones’ thoughts aligned with Musco except she didn’t make it further than 10 minutes into the debate. She said President Donald Trump, presidential candidate Joe Biden and debate moderator Chris Wallace were useless.

Edward Gomez said he’s a Trump supporter and that Wallace was very biased in his questioning and moderating. Gomez went a step further and said Wallace needs to stop moderating debates. Kim Crosby said that both candidates need to stay on topic and stop attacking each other. She also said that both of them need to actually talk about what their own plans are should they be elected.

Kimble TL said the candidates should be in separate sound proof rooms with mics that can be controlled individually, likely alluding to many people’s wish for the next debate: mutable mics.

“There are rules for debates for a reason,” Susan Alevy said. “If either candidate just wants to talk, hold a rally.”

Kevin Reid said the debate was a snooze fest while Bev Biroschik said there hasn’t been a debate in a long time as the rules of debate went out the window last week.

“I hope the rest of the world wasn’t watching,” Teresa Sanday said. “It didn’t take long...to remove the United States designation as innovative and diplomatic.”
