FLEMING ISLAND - Fleming Island High state champion golfer Tyler Mawhinney returned to Canada at the RBC Canadian Open as an amateur, popped off rounds of 68 and 69, struggled through a third round of 71, but stayed in contact with the field to make the fourth round cut in an extraordinary weekend of golf as an amateur on the PGA Tour event at Osprey Valley in Caledon, Ontario.
In college golf, at Florida Southern College, an NCAA Division II program, former Fleming Island High golfer Colton Swartz finished his sophomore season as a Golfers Coaches Association of American (GCAA) PING All-American with a second place finish at the NCAA Div. II national championship while leading his Mocs team to a fourth place team finish.
Mawhinny, an upcoming senior at Fleming Island High, who finished second in Class 2A this past season while fueling his Golden Eagles team to a second straight state title; 3A in 2024, 2A in 2025, was sitting tied for 66th place in the field for the round four field of 70 with such notables as Justin Rose; No. 21 in FEDEX Cup Standings; Rory McIlroy, No. 2 in FEDEX Cup standings, and Brandt Snedeker getting cut from the field.
Mawhinney, finishing at 2-under after the third round, just got in to the cut point; 3-under, to continue playing.
In round one, Mawhinney, at 68, 2-under par, finished with five birdies, three bogies and 10 pars to hit back-to-back 34s for his nine hole halves.
In round two, Mawhinney, at 69, 1-under par, kept pace through the opening nine holes at 34 with three birdies, two bogies and four pars, but had just two birdies on the second nine to finish with a 35 and his 69.
In round three, Mawhinney, at 70, at par, stayed at 34 for the front nine with birdies, but one double bogie, but struggled on the back nine with a 37 off eight pars, but a double bogie on his 18th hole.
