FLEMING ISLAND - Fleming Island High state champion golfer Tyler Mawhinney returned to Canada at the RBC Canadian Open as an amateur, popped off rounds of 68 and 69, struggled through a third round of 71, but stayed in contact with the field to make the fourth round cut in an extraordinary weekend of golf as an amateur on the PGA Tour event at Osprey Valley in Caledon, Ontario.
In college golf, at Florida Southern College, an NCAA Division II program, former Fleming Island High golfer Colton Swartz finished his sophomore season as a Golfers Coaches Association of American (GCAA) PING All-American with a second place finish at the NCAA Div. II national championship while leading his Mocs team to a fourth place team finish.
Mawhinny, an upcoming senior at Fleming Island High, who finished second in Class 2A this past season while fueling his Golden Eagles team to a second straight state title; 3A in 2024, 2A in 2025, was sitting tied for 66th place in the field for the round four field of 70 with such notables as Justin Rose; No. 21 in FEDEX Cup Standings; Rory McIlroy, No. 2 in FEDEX Cup standings, and Brandt Snedeker getting cut from the field.
Mawhinney, finishing at 2-under after the third round, just got in to the cut point; 3-under, to continue playing.
In round one, Mawhinney, at 68, 2-under par, finished with five birdies, three bogies and 10 pars to hit back-to-back 34s for his nine hole halves.
In round two, Mawhinney, at 69, 1-under par, kept pace through the opening nine holes at 34 with three birdies, two bogies and four pars, but had just two birdies on the second nine to finish with a 35 and his 69.
In round three, Mawhinney, at 70, at par, stayed at 34 for the front nine with birdies, but one double bogie, but struggled on the back nine with a 37 off eight pars, but a double bogie on his 18th hole.

Round four continued on Sunday, and Mawhinney was on track to continue his opening nine at 34 or 35 with a par four ninth hole and his score to that point at 31 with two birdies and two bogies. Mawhinney hit par on the ninth hole to finish at 35 (E) for the first nine holes.
In his fourth round, Mawhinney returned to form to grab a score of 69 with a final nine at one-under 34 after a 35 on the front nine with two bogies. In his final nine, Mawhinney had two birdies and just one bogie.
Swartz, who was tied for first in the individual scores until the final round, was named the Sunshine State Conference Golfer of the Year as well as a first team All-Sunshine State Conference selection.
In his last three outings, Swartz placed 10th at the Sunshine State Conference Championships before a 24th-place finish out of 121 golfers at the NCAA DII South/Southeast Regional at even-par 216, carding rounds of 70, 72, and 74. He finished stroke play in the NCAA DII Championships at 211 (-5) for second place, carding rounds of 67, 71, and 73.
Also on the Mocs team is another Fleming Island High grad with Jaylen Abbas competing as a freshman.
At the NCAA Div. II team quarterfinals, the 10th ranked MOCs fell to No. 3 North Georgia with Swartz finishing at even par (72) and Abbas finishing with a 77 (5-over) and hitting an Eagle. Abbas finished 76th in the individual tournament with a 229 (13-over).
