FLEMING ISLAND — After months of anticipation, the new Wawa at 1510 Merchant Boulevard opened with great fanfare on Thursday, Oct. 15.
And while many arrived bright and early to fill up their cars at Fleming Island's newest gas station and convenience store, others lined up outside impatiently waiting to walk through the doors.
"We open up our doors in a new store, but we also open up our hearts to the community," said Director of Store Operations Jay Ratcliffe.
Originating in 1964 in Pennsylvania, Wawa is a family-owned company known as a one-stop-shop for energizing your car and body. In addition to fueling stations, the store, includes a robust food menu featuring various breakfast, lunch and dinner options, as well as fresh-baked and grab-and-go goods. They also offer specialty beverages, like smoothies, milkshakes and energy drinks.
As a loyal patron of the store for the last 30 years, District 3 County Commissioner Jim Renninger said Wawa will be a great addition to Clay County, culminating into a $ 7.5 million investment.
"We're looking for a great collaboration between company and county," he said.
To celebrate, the gas station hosted a grand opening ceremony filled with performances by Fleming Island High's Eagle Band One and cheerleaders. The first 100 customers in line received free-t-shirts, and everyone that day was welcomed to a cup of free award-winning coffee.
Additionally, members of the Clay County Sheriff's Office and Clay County Fire and Rescue participated in "Hoagies for Heroes," Wawa's fundraising program that gives back to military, veterans and first responders.
The initiative, where groups divide into teams and compete to build as many hoagie sandwiches as possible within two minutes, is a signature event at every Wawa grand opening, said General Manager Jennifer Edmonds.
While Clay County Fire Rescue ultimately took home the bragging rights and trophy, Wawa also donated $1,000 to each team's charity of choice.
